Have you ever heard of the "Sandwich Caregiver"? Neither did we - until the phrase was brought up on a Caregiver support group call. The label "Sandwich Caregiver" and the role itself resonated with us. We immediately began to research.
In a nutshell, the typical "Sandwich Caregiver" is someone "sandwiched" between caring for a parent and raising their own children/family. If this is you, raise your hand! And know that you are not alone. As newly recognized Sandwich Caregivers, we are a collective, growing community, as our parents continue to live longer through their golden years.
Don't just take our word for it! The National Alliance of Caregiving provides in-depth research and stats about the Sandwich Caregiver and their role as part of a "care team." Did you know that "roughly a third of sandwich caregivers report a high level of emotional stress"? How about the fact that "one in five sandwich caregivers... feel[s] financial strain as a result of being a caregiver?" Check out these stats and more by clicking on the National Alliance of Caregiving icon!
Bottom line, we know each caregiving journey is unique. Even our two caregiving journeys are different. What we all share, however, are similar issues, stresses, questions, and fears. This website, these resources, this entire collective is a space for you to find some solace, whenever you feel that "sandwich" squeezing you.
